Superdrag

I've been checking this board out for awhile, and I'm convinced that all a person has to do to start up a shitstorm in here is type the word "Superdrag" into the message field. And if you say you think they're good, you can really piss some people off. So, I'm saying I think they're good. And unless you've been on tour for seven years, you don't have the right to say a goddamned thing.

Followups

Whoever says they suck should open their ears to albums like Head Trip and Valley. Not to mention countless demos. They work harder than any band I know. And they produce rock greatness.

maybe its me, but it seems to be a trend that as soon as a band does a wee bit of good for themselves it becomes hip to hate them.
not just dislike or not care for, but HATE them.
ok, ya know what, i like superdrag, i dont LOVE them, but i like them.
those that hate these guys, well i worry about you, do you rant and rave like this about they might be giants or the tom tom club or any other band that isnt from knoxville?
isnt it enough to say ,"i dont care for them" or "i dont like them"?
just a thought

Actually, I DO have the right to say any goddamn thing I want to. You see, music listening is a subjective experience and the amount of time I've spent 'touring' has nothing to do with my expertise in deciding what I like. Music CRITICISM is something different, although equally unaffected by 'touring' experience, which goes beyond subjective statements like, "So, I'm saying I think they're good," by judging pieces of music against established rules of form. And since we are not debating their merits as a band and simply stating opinions, I will say whatever the hell I want. That being said, I like 'em.

Hehheh, and which band out of Knoxville in the last ten years do YOU like?

SuperDrag far surpasses anything the shit little town you live has put out in recent memory. The are excellent songwriters, and their stage presence is great. The are a high-energy act, and let me tell you, they were, and always have been, the real thing.

If you want to equate them with some Britney Spears teen band, then you'll have a lot of lying to do. Those boys were sitting in the slums of the Fort hitting bongs and writing songs for years before they ever recorded an album.

You just hate them because someone said "Hey, these guys are good, let's give them a deal" to them, instead of to you. Get over it. They've never had the big head, they're nice to people they meet, so what else do you want?

Get over it, you Judyfag-loving little cunny.

MY MUSICAL OPINION ABOUT LOCAL BANDS...

IN ALL CAPS...

SUPERDRAG - DAMN GOOD, SOLID ROCK N ROLL BAND.

RUDE STREET PETERS - THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST BAND TO EVER COME OUTTA THE SLUMS OF MARYVILLE.

SMOKIN' DAVE AND THE PREMO DOPES - THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST BAND TO EVER COME OUTTA THE SLUMS OF FORT SANDERS.

EVIL TWIN - TWISTED SLEAZE DONE TO A PERFECT TURN. THE BITCH IN THE TIGHT LEATHER OUTFIT NEEDS TO GET A JOB THOUGH...

JUDYBATS - S.U.C.K.E.D. PERIOD.

IMMORTAL CHORUS - PLEASE STAY GONE.

All the rest of the local bands I remember are from ten years ago and therefore are NOT remembered by 99.9% of the local "scene" (i.e. college kids), so I won't even mention them except to say...

WH-WH KICKED TOTAL ASS AND SAGE FUCKIN' SUCKED!

How do you breathe with your head so far up your ass? Jesus! No wonder your breath smells shit.

Anyway, in order to clear up any misconceptions you have, I decided to clear up your post point by point.

1. I liked most of them. All the Steed bands kick(ed) major ass as did Total Frustration.

2. Superdrag's members are not "excellent songwriters." They are far from fair songwriters. With time and practice, not to mention a damn rhyming dictionary they might get good enough to write a new Weigel's jingle.

3. I never equated them to Britney or any other teen band. I'm just saying this town is full of fucking cheerleaders for the subpar.

4. Maybe the reason their "material" isn't so strong is the claim you made about them "sitting in the slums of the fort smoking a bong." If they hadn't smoked so much of whatever it is that they smoked, and listened to the Beatles so much their originality might have bloomed.

5. "They've never had the big head." Well, junior, you must be new to this area or to knowing who this band is. Let's recap for you. They walked around town like they landed from fucking Chelsea for three tired years. John Davis himself has had many, many tantrums in public many like the "I'm a multi-million dollar concern" fit he threw at Pick And Grin because AMEX declined his Les Paul purchase, all because he was too wrapped up in his own myth to call and activate the damn thing.

6. Tom and Brandon are the only ones with any real sense. Don is the only one with any God given talent. John, well, John just needs someone to loan him a buck fifty so he can buy a damn comb.

I am neither jealous nor a dumbass. The facts speak for themselves that Superdrag has not moved one inch from where they started. As I have stated many times before, I like Superdrag. Just because I like them does not mean that I have to be yet another lemming in their campaign for rock mediocrity. I think that they need to really start thinking about moving forward with their craft. Someone asked me one time if I would rather be a financial success or an artistic success since my buisness teeters between the two. I told them that I would rather be a commercial success therefore touching as many people as I could with my single craft. That is very good advise for John Davis and the other members of the week, well all except Don who is an original but then there were those rumours that John was going to dump him after Elektra released the first album, I didn't think it would happen and here I am six years later listening to him still drumming on their albums. Superdrag needs someone to lend them some guidance. Someone to take their hand and point them in a new direction, a direction that will yield them some serious longevity. Face it, Nada Surf, Fountains of Wayne, Buffalo Tom, Weezer and all other bands of that ilk are gone. They folded up their tents and left the carnival behind. Why? Well, because they dried up. They dried up and flew away. Why is it that just because someone is from own little town we have to think with all of our heart and soul that they are the fucking total best? They aren't. Sorry. Why can't we align and have something truly great? A band that grows and becomes something more than a stale debate point on a free weekly's discussion forum? Why can't you people see that we are nothing more than a town that loves to fucking champion mediocrity? Well, you can stand in the same place day after day and love all that is sub-par but I won't. I can't. I have to have a higher level of art, I have to have something worthwhile to spend my time with. We are born at one point and a very short time later we die. Why fill it with things that aren't going to stand the test of time? Why waste the short time we have settling for second or three hundred and second best? Fuck that.

I can't say for sure whether you're jealous or not, but you must surely be a dumbass if you actually believe some of the things you're saying.

To wit:

"The facts speak for themselves that Superdrag has not moved one inch from where they started."

What "facts" are these? Do you mean to tell me that in the past eight years, after releasing three acclaimed full-length albums, two EPs, tour after tour of the US, tours in the UK,Japan, etc., appearances on Conan O'Brien & 120 Minutes and blah blah blah blah blah, it's your honest opinion that these guys have made absolutely ZERO progress? You're full of shit. Where do you get off?

"...there were those rumors that John was going to dump (Don) after Elektra released the first album..."

I don't know where you heard that rumor, my guess would be on the short bus with other "challenged" people like yourself. What a joke.

"As I have stated many times before, I like Superdrag."

Seems like only yesterday you referred to them as being good for nothing except to line a bird cage. Make up your mind! Or better yet, save it for your support group. Maybe they can help you to come to terms with your Superdrag fetish.

"Superdrag needs someone to lend them some guidance. Someone to take their hand and point them in a new direction, one that will yield them some serious longevity."

Oh, really. I think that's what the folks at Elektra tried to do. And when Superdrag wouldn't go along with their bogus plans to achieve that "commercial success" you mentioned, they put out Vitamin C instead.
I've got news for you chief, in this day and age, being able to keep a band together and put out records for 7 or 8 years IS longevity.

"Why is is that just because somebody is from own (sic) little town we have to think with all of our heart and soul that they are the fucking total best? They aren't."

I don't think they're "the fucking total best." I never said I did. But I do think they deserve better than to be shat upon by the likes of you. I think you could give them at least a modicum of respect for what they've tried to do, rather than get on here and insult their mothers or whatever it is you generally do. We'll all sit up and take notice when "Scaramanga's Lonely Hearts Club Band" hits the shelves, but until then your scathing assessments of Superdrag or any other band don't really amount to jack-shit.

"1. I liked most of them. All the Steed bands kick(ed) major ass "

Hey, Todd Steeds a nice guy, no problems there, but i'm sorry if you think they 'all kicked ass". They most certainly ALL didn't.

"2. Superdrag's members are not "excellent songwriters."

Oh really? Well, now I see what you are. You are one of these wannabe but never-was people who sat around Hawkeyes listening to Tall Paul and Scott Miller, thinking that this was the 'real thing'.

It wasn't.

"3. I never equated them to Britney or any other teen band. "

And what was that comment "Put away the teenBeat" or whatever, about then? If you weren't equating them with 'any other teen band', then you're sure sending out the wrong signals. You need to practice up on your sarcasm.

"4. If they hadn't smoked so much of whatever it is that they smoked, and listened to the Beatles so much their originality might have bloomed.

They didn't sit around listening to the Beatles. I don't know where you get your info. They sat around listening to Mudhoney.

"5. "They've never had the big head." Well, junior, you must be new to this area or to knowing who this band is. Let's recap for you. "

I've known these guys for over ten years. Maybe I should be telling YOU about Superdrag. These guys were doing what they wanted to do and no one would write about them. They got signed because of perserverance and songwriting ability. And their solid stage show didn't hurt either.

Hmm....Maybe they just thought you were a dick (or bitch whatever).

Hold on a minute hoss, I mostly agree with you but you've stepped over the line there. Sure, Tall Paul is Monday night frat-boy-beer-fodder, but Scott Miller, as far as song writing ability goes, is right up there with John freaking Prine! You seem to know an awful lot about them and you're quite defensive about their failure. Of course, what could be expected from someone that like fucking Luna. Jeezus, get your head out of your ass and go buy a fucking Mac Davis tape.

Too bad they A)can't sell any records

Back up just a minute. You're always blathering on about SoundScan, why don't you try typing in Superdrag and see what you get. Granted, they never outsold Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or anything, but they have sold some records. They continue to sell records. Needless to say, they've sold more records than you.

B) can't play their instruments

Bullshit. Name an instrument, and I'll bet you John Davis can play it better than you. The guy's been playing music since he was five years old. As far as Don & Sam are concerned, they can both play the hell out of their respective instruments, every night of the week, and then drink your ass under the table.

C) can't get a record contract

Why in the hell would they want another record contract? To impress you? They're doing just fine where they're at, and they're doing things the way they want to.

D) can't seem to stop ripping off Weezer, The Beatles and even Ryan Downe.

I've never understood this one. What makes you think they rip off Weezer? Just because some dipshit at some Heavy Metal station here in town put it in an ad one time? I'll tell you one thing for sure, "Dying Stars" kicks the shit out of the latest offering from Weezer, hands down. I'll give you The Beatles thing, but they don't rip off the Beatles any worse than The Beatles ripped of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and The Everly Brothers. And who the hell is Ryan Downe?

I was going to stay out of this one simply because although I don't care for Superdrag, I don't really hate them either.

However, reading "Dying Stars kicks the shit out of the latest offering from Weezer" has impelled me to post. Granted I don't have Dying Stars, or any of Superdrag's other albums for that matter, but I have seen them play several live show and from what I've seen there is no way that their new album could be anywhere as good as Weezer's.

For starters, every song on Weezer's album sounds unique and different which is totally unlike anything I've ever heard from Superdrag. 15 minutes into an SD show and it is damn near impossible to tell if they ever finished up their first song or not.

For the record though, Superdrag sounds nothing like Weezer in my opinion. They both kind of came about into the same little niche of fans. But comparing the two is like comparing Blondie and the Ramones. Or even better, the Shirts and Blondie because much like Superdrag nothing ever really became of the Shirts.

If you think "every song on Weezer's album sounds unique and different", you're either deaf or "special." However, the first few bars of the opening track do sound an awful lot like "Slot Machine." If you don't have any of Superdrag's records, how can you possibly compare them to anything? As far as SD live is concerned, I couldn't disagree with you more. When's the last time you saw them? Try staying longer than 15 minutes next time, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how wrong you are.

Re:

Posted by Now You Have Gone Too Far , Aug 22,2001,12:08   MetroBlab

When I said unique and different all I meant was that you can tell each song apart from the others. Also, as I said, I am not comparing the Weezer album to any of Superdrag's because again, I refuse to spend any good hard earned cash on any of their records.

Listen, Superdrag is a very good band, but no they are not great by any means. Anyone who would argue differently is obviously either a good friend of the bands, or are trying to suck up to them because they were hip several years ago.

I have been to a handful of Superdrag shows and stayed for their entire set and everytime I have always been much more impressed with the opening band. Maybe I should go give them another chance next time I see they're playing, but why should I if all their other shows sucked?

"Simon," don't you have a heroin whore to fuck or something?

1. According to SoundScan the catalog total for them is under 150k, many of which were sent out for promotion. Actual scanned (ie:bought) numbers are lower.

2. Yeah, I stand by that statement. Maybe all that time they didn't spend at Berklee would help them against someone who did.

3. A recording contract on a major label is the point, isn't it? Yes. It is.

4. Blah, blah, blah. If you don't know who Ryan Downe is then come back when you do. But, speaking of Weezer, they have had over thirty pages in RS over the past three years. Beatles ripped off Little Richard? No shit.

5. I like Superdrag. Always have, always will. The simple fact of the matter is that they are not goddamn Led Zepplin nor are they Bowie. Why is it that we must be cheerleader and not let them grow into the roles they need to fill in order to become true icons? Think about that junior. Think about that.

I don't post much here, but I do read alot...
Their failure??? What part of Superdrag do you you see as failure? Putting out records they are proud of? Putting out records that get listened to by fans? What's the problem? Jag Star puts out records they are proud of (I hope)...so do (did) the V-Roys...so does Todd Steed, so does every other band in town. What is the problem with putting to record what you are proud of? What good does it do for some lonely hack to critique it ? None. So, all opinions aside, "Give it hell Superdrag", and, "give it hell Whatever Band"...I think Ray Davies said it a couple of years ago...something like...stories get told and passed down, don't stop that, keep passing them, because somebody will hear it, and it WILL be appreciated. I may not like Jag Star, I may not like Blue Mother Tupelo, but I will like the fact that someone is trying to pass down what they feel passionate about, and that is to be respected...Give it HELL Superdrag!

Dexy's Midnight Runners had one hit, but it was huge. They're still living on those royalties and I bet everyone on this board can still at least hum that tune if not sing the whole damn thing. That my friends, is a success.

"Success" is relative to what you're after. It's like money. If I came into ten thousand dollars, I would consider myself to be rich (at least for the moment). To someone else, it would be nothing.

Why doesn't everyone get over their jealousy of Superdrag. Do I like them? No. But, hats off to `em. They're doing what they want to do and getting paid for it. Myra, how about you? You must have some nice cozy office job somewhere?! Cool. I'll bet you consider that to be "success".

Actually, I have a high pressure office job that's putting me through school and allowing me to finish my degrees free of charge. And yes, for the time being that is a success. I live on my own and support myself without any outside financial help from my family or friends. I manage to work 40 hours at my not so cushy office job, go to school part-time, dance professionally with a ballet company 18 hours per week and maintain time for my friends and family. And yes, I consider that to be a success. Eventually, I'll be making close to (if not exactly) a 6 figure salary and helping people in the process, have no student loans and be all the happier in my life knowing that I pursued my goals and after much sweat, stress, and plain old hard work, I will have achieved them. And do you know what? That all adds up to longevity. The same concept I was discussing before. All Superdrag and those like them want to do is say they were great, and they want others to say it too. That doesn't add up to much, monetarily or otherwise. I have no doubt they practice a lot, but like Kenny Rogers said, you gotta know when to fold 'em. If they haven't made it yet, then perhaps they need to pursue a different line. Music is a fickle business. All of the arts add up to a very fickle business because most people have the collective attention span of a gnat. I may not be famous, but my work is quality and I care deeply for all the people in my life. That's enough for me and I don't need to have my ego stroked regularly on a message board or anywhere else.

I believe the failure Mr. Scary speaks of is the repetitive sound and lack of longevity of the band in question and its music. Yes, they sound like Weezer. Yes, they had one "hit" (I use the term loosely here), but no, their "sound" (again, loosely) didn't catch on nor did it last. Great bands and great songs have something called longevity. I know, it's a big word, but if you're in the business you need to understand it, respect it and then you need to achieve it if you want your kids to hear your music. Bands that last and produce tunes we sing and hum long after they hit, usually have a sound that cannot be reproduced by another band (no, covers don't count). Take U2 or R.E.M., I can't think of one other band that truly sounds like them or their music. Many have certainly tried, but please. . .it can't be done. I used to love Immortal Chorus, I also used to be a teenager. I couldn't hum a single Immortal Chorus tune if you paid me now. Dexy's Midnight Runners had one hit, but it was huge. They're still living on those royalties and I bet everyone on this board can still at least hum that tune if not sing the whole damn thing. That my friends, is a success. Bono could retire tomorrow -- or 10 years ago for that matter -- and he and his bandmates could live off the royalties of any one of their albums since Joshua, nevermind the whole catalog.

Now children, can we move on? The Drag isn't worth all this. . .really now. . . .

Haha.

That must be what you say everytimne you have nothing left to say.

BTW, who is Luna? Is that a band? If so, it has nothing to do with my name.

p.s. I think you've been sufficiently smacked. Have a nice day.

Smacked? Are you fucking out of your mind? I haven't even been pinched. Why don't you just admit that you're wrong and that Superdrag is mosy likely the worst excuse for a band to ever grace the liner of a birdcage? You have no vaild points, you're running purely on emotional garbage for a band that will never be any larger than Con Hunley just so you can impress chicks at a bar that you might have spoken to one of the members at some point in your pathetic little life.

That hole you're digging for yourself is getting bigger and bigger. Keep talking out of your ass, it just makes you look as dumb as you most likely are.

"...just so you can impress chicks at a bar that you might have spoken to one of the members at some point in your pathetic little life..."

Heheh. It sounds to me like maybe YOU just met them once in your life, and they wouldn't let you suck them off. Trust me, I've never mentioned knowing SDrag as a way to pick up a chick, I know much more famous musicians.

BTW, my 'pathetic little life' has included two albums, endless tours in America and Europe, and huge festivals.

What, exactly, are your credentials?

That's what I thought. LOL!

...leaving him quite daft

So, what band were you in? Show me something to support your claims.

Clearly you weren't that big, if you were you surely wouldn't have all this time to dick around on the 'blab talking about a band whose real fame didn't strectch past 21st Street.

Ian, you ignorant slut. You better stop this shit before I sic the clowns on you!

For the record, my success is the sole reason I can do this. I wasn't a fucking rock star and if I was I'm sure I would be too fucking stoned or waiting in line to get a penicillin shot or something.

Club, not pin. Pins are what you throw bowling balls at.

Noooooo Plum.....Tom & Jerry!.....duuuuhhhhhhhhh....:-)

Just Playin

You guys know what?....I don't think I even know who Superdrag is...I'm sure they are much better than I am at singing and playing instruments though. I like to enjoy the local Jazz and Bluegrass bands the most. I don't see many other local groups.
