yahoo works for me-- and I also use a junk filter-- that once you sort it all out-- really works fine (on hotmail)

I concur. I receive very little junk e-mail on my Yahoo account. I'm not sure that I attribute that completely to Yahoo, but at least they aren't blatantly selling my name & address to advertisers.

I have had a free Excite.com account for a couple of years now and they generally keep the spamola to a minimum. The worst spam I get is from the Nation magazine, but I guess I asked for that, and they would probably stop if I asked nice. In general, though, pretty clean.

THE NATION is evil about that stuff. I once requested a six-free-issue trial-subscription deal, with the upfront, right-there-in-black-and-white understanding that I could bow out with no charge if I wanted. Jesus, I thought I was going to have to hire a hitman to whack some guys just stop them from bugging me about it til the end of my days. They sent me all these angry-sounding collection-agency-type letters about how I OWED them for a subscription, which was clearly not the case by their own printed terms. It went on for weeks and weeks, until a fusillade of my own angry letters made them stop. In the end, I was truly sorry I had ever heard of their liberal asses--Keyser Sose is a panty-waist hiding behind his mama's skirt compared to the NATION.I've also read that they are one of the absolute worst for reselling their mailing lists to direct-mail marketers too. Apparently, you can get hooked up on six or seven fresh lines of mailbox-filling crap just by making the mistake of letting them know where you live.

Plus, it's just kind of boring. And I agree with most of their politics. Give me Harper's or even the New Yorker anyday. At least the writing is good in those rags.As for selling subscription lists, lefty groups are some of the worst offenders. A neat way to track who selling your address is to spell your name slightly different with everything you subscribe or give money to.

Well, I had purchased the subscription on-line for a commie friend of mine. I read it once in a while, but I also read the Wall Street Journal. They both have interesting movie reviews. I figure if I get blown by the blowhards both on the left and right, I'll end up somewhere in the middle of the road. I don't think there's an opinion publication out there that hits me exactly right. Politicians should either be worried or comforted by that, I'm not sure which. As far as The Nation's politics is concerned, I think it's just hard for them to lock in with people's concerns anymore. Not that everything is just peachy keen in the world, but even with massive layoffs, people feel pretty comfortable day-to-day in this country. No real fear anymore of being overrun (which was the case for at least half of the last century). Even with all the phony talk of downsizing government, there are still plenty of places people can go to get back on their feet if they have a spell of hard time. So with things relatively okay here, it's hard to get the energy up to worry about some poor Indian in Nicaragua or some sorry bastard in a Chinese prison camp. Sorry, but that's just the way it is. A person can spend their entire life working hard to end human suffering, but there just never seems to be an end to it. Anyway, the spam filter on my excite.com box must really work good if it's keeping the Nation's spam cohorts out. Another reason to look into it.

I've done that-- put in a fake middle inital matching the name of the mag (or whatever, as in N for Nation, or C for Creem)-- I got stuff off one music magazine for about 8 years. I don't trust the lefties anymore than the righties-- especially don't trust any press with a PRONOUNCED RELIGIOUS-LIKE FERVOR to one political leaning. Life's just too damn complicated for that nonsense. The only nation I trust is Jay.
