Speaking of burquas, Wendy will probably wear one on her wedding night, when she finds the appropriate eunuch-with-flaccid-male-genitalia to prance her down the aisle. She is something like twenty-two going on eight, only with less insight into the human sexual psyche than the average eight-year-old.I thought Wendy Shalit was interesting when I first read about her, because I understand her dismay at a society whose women constantly try to look sexy or "tough" at the expense of looking feminine, attractive, and smart. (For example, the tattoo thing: I always want to ask, "It's cool. But what the fuck were you thinking?" Hey, it's your body. Do whatever you want.) But the problem with Shalit is that she doesn't stop with an opinion, she advocates for assimilation at the expense of diversity. She is one of those...ahem...REACTIONARY types who believes that all society should conform to her traditional standards of decorum, with no appreciation of or allowance for feminine self-expression. And she's a drip, too. Yawn.

Interestingly, Wendy Shalit's close relative, Ruth Shalit, is a real hottie who is not noted for her Victorian modesty.
disclaimer....

By the way, for the love of Christ, please do not interpret my comments on tattoos and tough-mama attire (i.e., leather, men's jeans, chains, wife-beater tee shirts, combat boots, or body piercing) as an attack on free self-expression or diversity. I happen to find tough mamas very cool. And I possess and frequently wear my own share of what could arguably be characterized as not-particularly-feminine attire. So there's no judgment here. And if the tattoo comment sounded too harsh, I will add that most of my friends have at least one somewhere on their bodies. It is, after all, the rage these days.
Quote for you

"Sensuality, too, which used to show itself coarse, smiling, unmasked, and unmistakable, is now serious, analytical, and so burdened with a sense of its responsibilities that it passes muster half the time as a new type of asceticism." -Agnes Repplier, "Fiction in the Pulpit," Points of View, 1891I have some more. Read "Eve's Revenge: Saints, Sinners, and Stand-up SIsters on the Ultimate Extinction of Men," by Tama Starr. It's not necessarily a man hater book as the name suggests, it just gives a unique and funny perspective on how the sexes feel about different things based upon quotes throughout history, etc. I think it's funny.
Asceticism
Re: Quote for you -- Angie
Okay, I had to look it up, I can admit it! So, just in case there exists others who do not readily know what it means, here is the definition:Asceticism: the doctrine that a person can attain a high spiritual, and moral state by practicing self-denial, self-mortification, and the like

I don't think it's all about female modesty as it is just common respect. I walk my dog down the street because she likes it, granted I wear a pair of shorts and a sportsbra...not exactly modest...I'm not a jet landing strip and quite frankly my body, in itself, is not modest; however, I don't have a sign on my back that says "Please whistle and make comments on my ass as you drive by...I like it." It makes me so damn mad when I cannot be shown the same common respect I would show another human being. I get sick and tired of it. I just wonder what possesses people to do that, in my case it's men people. Do they think I find that flattering? Do they think I will chase them down and beg them for a date? I just want to walk my damn dog...that's all. I don't ask for any attention nor do I want any, just don't drive up on the sidewalk and hit me. Society has lost its respect for human beings in general, not just female modesty.

In your passion for all things femme-centric, JJJ, have you happened to read Simone de Beauvoir? Virginia Woolf? Gertrude Stein? Camille Paglia? Or listened to Bikini Kill? Sleater-Kinney? Hole? Etc. They've got plenty of opinions about the specific challenges of being a woman, and not many of them have to do with "modesty." jfm "I don't do the dishes/ I throw them in the crib" --Courtney Love

Is this the same JJJ who was thinking about scamming on the hottie at the pool in the earlier thread? I'm sure she had on one of those 19th-century ankle-length swimming outfits.
