If you wanna keep your site free from smart you can disable them. http://www.glassdog.com/smarttags/ There's a tag listed there (along with some more info) that will disable smart tags. You do have to put it in the head each page but at least it is an option.

The esteemed Mr. Blackburn is likely correct here, though Micro$oft has decided to table Smart Tags (at least in their next "official" release of IE, If you picked up a beta, you can still turn it off in your config).
But they're not the only ones who are pulling off this insideous little deed.
The software developers of EZula have created some dispicable slutware called TOPtext, shipping as part of the standard install on some packages like KaZaa, a file-sharing software, that has a similar function. Expect more.
