Well, the REAL news from Arbitron is that radio listenership in general is in rapid decline. Why? Because it all sucks, except for the occasional public radio or college station. Let's face it - no one who actually LIKES music can stand to listen to commercial radio - period.

There are just as many people listening to "commercial radio" as ever. The only real change is the fact that the FCC "dropped in" more channels so the listenership is spread around more than it was before. Think about it, until the mid-80s there were only ten or so FM radio stations in a given "market," today there are 20+.

Well, this is simply not true. According to recent articles in both the New York Times and Rolling Stone (to name but two), Arbitron surveys have indicated a continual erosion in overall radio listenership for well over a decade, and a rather dramatic decline in the past few years. They are finding it especially difficult to interest younger audiences more tuned into the tv, the internet, and a zillion other things besides radio. Interestingly, one of the most common reasons given for this decline in radio listenership is deregulation and the "overhomogenization of formats" (in other words, people are sick of hearing the same old shit). Obviously, anyone with a vested interest is going to try like hell to deny these trends so that they can continue to sell overpriced advertising. But the facts are the facts: commercial radio sucks and NO ONE WHO REALLY CARES ABOUT MUSIC CAN STAND TO LISTEN TO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess that you and they are right then. I mean, Rolling Stone! The magazine of choice for thirteen year old boys! The magazine that broke up the Beatles! The magazine that fails to report accurate information and has been "called on the carpet" for it various times in thier 30+ history! And the New York Time! Well, what was their source? What did they do? Walk down the street and count how many people were wearing heaadphones and listening to Walkman type devices?I just looked up the sample audience for the Spring 2001 survey and the Spring 1999 survey and they have increased by fourteen thousand listeners in Knoxville alone. I guess for a market to increase seven thousand people per year is a decline. According to RadioInk, Arbitron, R&R and Billboard (not to mention Broadcast Data Systems), Nationwide the number is up more than 11% per market. But then again I don't think that Arbitron would how many people were listening to the radio at any given moment considering that they are the one's that monitor that activity.

The New York Times' source was the president of Arbitron. I don't have the Rolling Stone article with me but they referenced several sources, including a couple of the industry's most highly regarded analysts. You may attack the messenger if you wish, but when forced to consider you as a source, I'll take Rolling Stone anyday. Their 13 year old boy mentality is far more mature that yours.

Veronis Suhler Forecasts 6.8% Growth For RadioVeronis Suhler's 15th annual Communications Industry Forecast, which is set to be released today, predicts that total radio advertising expenditures will expand at a compound annual rate of 6.8% from 2000 to 2005, reaching $26.5 billion in 2005. The forecast predicts also that while radio was one of the fastest-growing media segments overall from 1995 to 2000, radio advertising will be off 0.7% in 2001, with local spot advertising flat, national spot down 3.5% and radio network advertising down 0.5%. The study also predicts that expenditures on national spot advertising will continue to rise at slightly higher rates than local spots during the five-year period that began last year. National spot spending will grow at a compound rate of 7.2%, reaching $5.2 billion by 2005, while local spots will grow at a rate of 6.7%, reaching $20.3 billion in 2005, Veronis Suhler predict. They also estimate that total ad spending for all consumer media will grow at a rate of 5%, reaching $225 billion in 2005. That would give radio 11.7% of the advertising pie.

Cock Rock can't be covered on the Arbitron...since WUTK isn't a commercial station, they don't show up in "ratings," which of course commercial radio uses to base their ad rates...

If they don't show up, and they are surveyed, what does that tell us? Nobody is listening.

No, it means that they can't be an option for the people who are surveyed for Arbitron to mark. See above where I mention their noncommercial status. Just as NPR affiliates can't be ranked in Arbitron, neither can WUTK. Arbitron can only point out that station such as these exist, but not give specifics on listenership. Jackass.

So I guess that this page, 145, of the Spring 2001 Radio Survey where all the stations you are listing are ranked with the "commercial" stations is wrong. Oh well, you would know more about it than the people that put the survey out.

I found the University station and gave it a listen when I first got here a couple of months ago. It sucks. This cannot be said enough. I am from up north and we have good radio where I am from. And all of the little shows like cock rock must only be on because of who is sucking who. A better title for the show would be What two fags do with their spare time.

Ok, I said I wasn't gonna be an obnoxious asshole any more...Aw hell, screw it! Listen you little stuck up, self-righteous yankee slut; Cock Rock is one of the things that make WUTK listenable. You wanna be a smarmy little college bitch? Fine, but do it back "up north" in the land of bleeding heart, liberal, homosexual-ass-kissing yankees and leave us god-fearing southern boys out of it. That is if you're not too busy sucking down cheap beer at Mike and Willie's (and sucking off frat boys). Thank you and goodnight. MS

Dear Ms. Another New Girl,You must be trolling. Not because you're bitching about Cock Rock (hey, you are a girl) but with that "where I'm from up North" bullshit. So, that said I ain't falling for it. But in case you aren't trolling, let me ask you: Is this the extent of the contribution we can expect from you?
