Just Want to Play Loud

Old enough to be your embarrassing dad? Maybe. But lately I've been turning my old amp up louder and louder. Hearing going? Don't think so. There's just nothing like playing a good, hard-driving rock guitar with the volume up. Yeah, yeah, we're all writing sensitive alt.country songs. And maybe it's because Joey Ramone died. Maybe I'm just bored. But I'm thinking that rock is about anger and frustration, and now I'm getting angry and frustrated about missed opportunities in my life. Not hearing anything on the radio that relates to my life. And the loud guitar makes me feel better, just like it did when I was 18. I say it's still viable. I say the dream is still alive.

So what, I'm old. But I'd love to get in a band and play good and loud.

Name-dropping Factoid: (boy, I'm full of them today...) -- Lou Gramm of Foreigner is from my hometown (Rochester, N.Y. -- yes, we don't have many celebrities...) and his kids went to the school where my mom teaches. So Lou, who's a very short Italian man, came in for parent conferences a lot and all that. He even did a fund-raising concert for the school. Nice guy. I'm not saying that makes up for "Dirty White Boy" or "I Want to Know What Love Is," but still, it makes me think more fondly of him as I reach to change the station whenever Foreigner comes on.

p.s. As for the loud guitar guy -- try taking up boogie-woogie piano. It's what my dad did when he couldn't find anyone to play music with anymore. He had fun. Now he's learning accordion, I think...

Hold on there buddy. Foreigner mostly sucked, but "Dirty White Boy" kicked ass. As well as the local wrestler with the same name. Also kicks ass, that is.

My drug problem is, hopefully, behind me and is a non-issue. And the Dirty White Boy (or Uncle Cletus as he was all-too-briefly known in the WWF) is still one of my favorite pro wrestlers.
