I'm not 100% confident that all these numbers are 100% accurate because there is no standardized format for budget reporting, and the information comes from a variety of sources such as state budget documents, the census, industry trade groups, and media. So, there may be some "apples and oranges" going on. But, I'd guess these numbers are good within a few hundred million, and indicate some general trends and ratios.
This exercise has convinced me of one thing: there should be federally mandated standardized reporting requirements for reporting state and federal spending, like a 10-Q for publicly traded companies.
