I really don't want to see a Sox/Cubs series, mostly because the Sox aren't a very good team. Big bombers, no finesse, two good starting pitchers and a dud of a bullpen. Besides, I don't think either one of those called third strikes in the bottom of the ninth last night was a strike. (I'm ignoring the metaphysical question of whether a pitch being called a strike is what makes it a strike, regardless of where it is.) I really have to struggle against my purist instincts, but even for me the possibility of a match-up between the sport's great loveable losers just reeks of nostalgia. I'm more interested in baseball.

I think you're right, Sox/Cubs would be a little too cute -- and it's probably not gonna happen. It'll take some really bad ballplaying by the Yankees to lose to the Sox. Still, those last two Sox/A's games were some killer baseball. (You might be right about the final called strike, but the one before that was a beautiful pitch -- at least, from my vantage point...)Anyway, you're just bitter cuz the Cubbies beat the Braves.

I was a huge Cubs fan as a kid, thanks to the wonders of cable TV. They had it all over the Braves -- Harry Caray, the ivy-covered wall, Ryne Sandburg, and, most of all, games on during the day. I didn't really root for the Braves until I moved to Atlanta, but now I think they're well worth cheering for. They had one of the all-time great rotations for years, they develop players from their minor-league system, and they always managed, even with lots of shuffling, to keep a fairly consistent core of players on the team. And they were always balanced behind the pitching staff -- decent hitting, always some power, and solid defense and base running. Sure, Chipper Jones is an asshole. But he was a good third basemen and a hell of a switch hitter. Yeah, 12 division titles = one World Series championship sucks. Bobby Cox can't manage a short series. But Braves hating doesn't make sense to me, especially when that's so much hate that could be directed at the Yankees and Mets. I think the Cubs have a legitimate chance to beat the Yankees. (But the Marlins also have a shot at beating the Cubs.) The Yanks slightly out-talent the Cubs, but the Cubs have callow youth. They don't seem to understand that they're the Cubs. I fully expected to become a Cardinals fan when I moved here. There the prototypical National League small ball team -- all those years of Willie McGee and Ozzie Smith. But LaRussa's boneheaded coaching and the swing-for-the-fences attitude turned me off a little bit. God, I hate the emphasis on offense in modern baseball. It's so boring. With that, I figure I've officially killed this thread.

You make some great points. Especially that LaRussa sucks. He doesn't know how to manage in the NL. He still thinks he's at Oakland. The Braves, can't stand them myself, but they did have an outstanding pitching staff, too bad about Bobby Cox not getting a few more rings. I also liked the Cubs when Ryno and Lee Smith, Andre 'the Hawk' Dawson, Shawon Dunston, etc. were there. But man did they choke in that series with San Diego- lost 3 in a row. Perhaps St. Louis will get the white rat back someday. One can hope.

With that, I figure I've officially killed this thread. But there will be more... (The Braves are impressive, no doubt about it. But their persistent also-ran status does get a little wearing even for non-fans.)

BABE RUTH!"Let's Go Yank-ees!" The Rocket deserves to go out in style. And possibly Torre, too. Manny and Pedro deserve to get nothing and like it.

yeah the last 2 games against Oakland were awesome, i almost called in to band practice so i could watch it last night. at least i caught from the bottom of the 6th on. Martinez was the man last night, thats for sure. but yeah, you are right: the Yanks are going to mop the floor with the Sox. hopefully the Sox will get a couple of games end, but im betting just 1 though. wonder what the odds in vegas are of a Cubs/Sox Series. ah, to dream the impossible dream... good to see that a New Yawker has the balls to support the boston team. so you are going to wear your Sox jersey to a bar tonight, right jess? ;)

Wouldn't a Cubs/Sox series be phenomenal? TV ratings would be the best in years. As a Cards fan, I guess I would have to cheer for my fellow National Leaguers. BTW, Tony LaRussa sucks.

If the Cubbies lose I see their fans saying "Wait 'til next year." I see die-hard Sox fans slitting their wrist. And did anyone see the little "goat" grahic Fox put on the bottom of the screen during the Cubs game?

We're going to mop the floor with the Yanks. They have no chance. Those loud mouthed pricks might as well just stay in the Bowery.
