Sometimes I, too, go on "genre binges" in a specific shopping trip, yeah. It's just not that easy when your best access to music is Disc Exchange. Don't get me wrong, they have lots of great indie stuff, but just try finding an old Eric B. and Rakim or Slick Rick album. It's quite a chore.

For some reason, DE only re-stocks the "rock/pop" section with any frequency.

They probably assume (and rightly so) that "hip-hop" fans are only interested in the millions of "new" rappers and don't give a shit about the history of the genre. Which is a crying shame.

I spent the better part of the day in a Tower Records in London one summer...man, four floors! Any kind of music you can imagine, even a CD of old-time music I'd never seen before, with a version of "Muleskinner Blues" I'd never heard before (UK imprint). I was in such a daze upon leaving that I didn't "mind the gap" and nearly fell flat on my face on a sidewalk right in the heart of the most fashionable shopping district in London!

Anyway, maybe it's much safer to let Disc Exchange order it or get it off the Net.

weve got a Virgin Megastore near Berkley like that, 4 floors and all. one floor even has a section for techno and had a turtablist dj-ing in the corner. its an ok store, a lot of neat stuff thats harder to find, but you will pay through the nose for everything, even indie ($19 for the Dismemberment Plan?!?).

yeah Disc Exchange is really not bad as far as records stores go. especially given the size of the city.

as for stuff thats harder to find, the best thing to do is order it online from one of many sources. also a lot of stuff can be ordered directly from the band or label's website. i dont know where id be without Insound. ya gots no excuse on finding stuff with places like that online. i have quite a few stores at my disposal here, but i still order from Insound quite often.

then there is always Half.com. youd be surprised the finds you can find there, as well as how cheaply you can get those things.
