My review is a fashion review, of the attire of a young man I spotted recently walking up 6th Avenue hand in hand with his girlfriend:

Faded blue jeans, very safe but effective: B
Brown canvas sneaker, hip but somewhat out of sync with the black T-shirt: B
Black T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Superdrag": A

Overall grade: B+

Movie review

I saw 24 Hour Party People last night on DVD. Its about the Manchester music scene in the late 70's early 80's. Most specifically Factory records. It's shot as though it's a documentary, but lets on right away that it is, in fact a re-enactment, sort of. There are many cameos (which the main character/narrator often pauses to point out) and at one point, the cameo person (who's dopple is in the current scene) interrupts to state that it really didn't happen that way.

It sounds distracting, but I found it very entertaining. The insight on what was going on at the time in music was fascinating.

All in all, I recommend it for anyone with a passing interest in Joy Division/New Order or the Happy Mondays.

I got a big kick out of it, and only partly because I lived in Manchester for a little while at the tail end of the Madchester days. I loved that it was dedicated to the people of Manchester at the end.

The new Northern Lights hybrid is one of the most elegant strains to develop in a long time. This mostly Indica hybrid is rumored to have origins in California, and is comprised of light flowers with a forest hue. It has an earthy smooth somewhat fruity citrus flavor, and a good shelf life. The Canadian variant, richer in flavor, is more reminiscent of the more powerful Afghan Aurora.

I just recently finished reading something I'd intended to read for several years now and just hadn't gotten around to - Henry Rollins' "Get in the Van", the collection of journal entries from his days with Black Flag. Other than the fact that it made me feel about a thousand years old, it was decent enough reading, good feel for nearly-bankrupt-band-on-the-road stuff, and I've always found Henry's writing pretty thoughtful and intelligent and did so once again. I did find it curious that the accounting of dates in Memphis and Knoxville - especially Knoxville with its one particularly legendary Flag show - only warranted a line or two or three. In any case, it's a good book for the musically addicted and also easy to pick up and read a little and put down for a few days and go back to (which I generally wouldn't do and kind of enjoyed being able to do that with this since I've been busy lately). Some cool pix too. I'd give it an A- for the musically inclined; for those who could give a rat's hiney about the '80s underground it'd probably only warrant a C- or less.

On another note about books, got to re-pick up Donna Tartt's "The Little Friend" and finish it since I started it last March while on jury duty, got halfway thru, and stopped. Her debut "The Secret History" was an all-time fave of mine and this one was going great but I just got too busy to finish it. Wish I knew where all that spare time I used to have for reading book after book voraciously long ago disappeared to, sigh. In any case, even though I haven't finished that one as yet, I'd give it an A if you dig Southern-gothic-eccentric-type-women writers...

I'm coaching a 8/9 year old girls soccer game tomorrow. They had practice yesterday and I would rate it a 3 out of 5 star effort. Looking to go 4-0 tomorrow. Jester, sorry, you're not invited. I don't want you showing up and spewing any baloney about young innocent girls.

And since I brought up women's soccer, I would rate the Canadian team's performance last night easily as 9.5 out of 10 versus China. Great defensive performance in shutting down China's offense. They don't call it the beautiful game for nothing.
Makes me want to start playing again in a rec league.

ive seen more orange and white "T" ballcaps up here than im comfortable with. apparently there is a bar somewhere downtown where Vol fans get together to watch games up here.

speaking of Vol fans, i was in a cafe in Harvard Square enjoying a falafel and watching the folks go by the bay window, when i heard one of the thickest southern accents ever coming from 2 women at the register. i actually turned around and gawked i was so surprised. and yes, one was decked out in orange and white. and they bought a bottle of Moxie. odd.

so Jess, seen/heard any Vol types up in your parts?

sooo..anyone going to see any bands/movies this weekend? im THIS close to seeing School of Rock, since i heard Linklater directed it and was written by the same guy who wrote 'Chuck and Buck'.

no shows though, but dont know for sure yet. well going to see a local band tonight. and then of course, there is always SPOOOOKYWORLD!

I'm on the fence about "School of Rock." I like Linklater and love Jack Black, in spite of myself (or him, maybe). But the trailer and early reviews indicate a heart-warming good time.

I'm sure I'll see it. But my expectations are diminished -- just hoping for a winning performance from JB now, as opposed to the inspired wackiness I expected when I first heard about it.

yeah, "heartwarming" is one of those thing i tend to avoid in movies. i did see 'Swimming' last night on DVD, with Lauren Ambrose. was shot at Myrtle Beach, if i remember correctly. was pretty good, kinda reminded me of 'Lost in Translation' for some reason, though i dont really know why. maybe cause both never really go anywhere, and that can be a good thing. i will probably skip 'School of Rock' this week, unless i can catch it sunday afternoon sometime.

I was leery about School of Rock from the previews, but all the reviews -- including by people I respect -- are way enthusiastic. I'm definitely going -- if Linklater plus Mike White plus Jack Black doesn't equal at least a couple hours of worthwhile entertainment, I will lose all faith in the world.

Does Wash U. even have a football team? Even folks I know in the Loo who went to MizzU don't give a shit about football. They say it's sooo Illinois. (that means for rednecks, farmers and small town folks)

Yeah, people root for the Mizzou football team, but it's an afterthought. It ranks behind (in rough order): the Cardinals, the Rams, the Blues, Mizzou basketball, SLU basketball, high school basketball, and the Anhueser-Busch softball team.
