Ah. I'm sure you're right. (Sigh) Did you know a game of 11-ball costs 50 cents here?

11 ball that's Pool?

I have no idea what it goes for here... lots of bars here though, lots of Irish folks.

You'd imagine I'd be a pool player as much as hang around in bars but I've always just loved music and talking to other folks.

Man if your ever driving through Kentucky and want to step back in time for a bit pull off the road in Richmond Kentucky, there is a bar there called Clancy's I think not sure, but if you realy want to go just ask for the oldest bar you can play pool in downtown.

The walls are painted yellow sorta like a Van Gogh painting. When you first walk in if it's summertime it will take your breath for a second because of 50 years worth of piss and beer soaked into the boards. Once you've caught your breath and regained your compsure you will be standing with your back to a cigaratte machine and a lunch counter at one of the older bars in Kentucky, about 50 years old if I'm not mistaken, and used to be the first place you could get beer after leaving Tennesse, about a 2 hour drive over that stretch of mountain that always seems to have bad weather.

A PBR was around $1.25 four years ago when I was there. Don't eat anything the ventiallation is galvinized and is slowly flaking off into the food. However after taking in the staff and locals, go back and play some pool. You'll need to give the young man a quarter and he will rack your balls for you. The balls are faded pastel colors there so old. If you need to put some chalk on your stick look down there is usualy some chalk shoved into one of the knotholes, very cool...

There will probably be some sorta game going on with the first table involving some sort of apparatus that adds and incline and extra holes. I never could figure out what they were doing but they bet on it but never seem to get to rowdy.

As a matter of fact once me and Monica was there after an unfortuanate Golfing incident, I went to the bathroom and Oh my god the bathrooms have the added smell of clorox, and the womens bathroom has been cut off the back quarter of the mens.

But anyways while I'm in there some large fellow with his back to Monica curses after missing a set up shot, his buddies nudge himm and glance at Monica which he immediatly apologized.

A great Bar, but man Richmond sucks lol

Sounds like a good place. I'll try to remember.

And the 11-Ball I was referring to is a silly computer game (on one of those kiosks) in which the sole goal is to make pool balls add up to 11. Silly and addictive. It's only a quarter at Macleod's.

As for real pool, I've been playing more of that lately. I love it, even though I generally can't shoot for shit. Every once in a while I'll have a hot game where things actually go where I tell them to, but I'm pretty sporadic. My best girl is a much more consistent player; she usually beats me. (she gets so cute and excited when she wins that it's worth the loss, although I always play to win)

But there's a bar in our neighborhood that's one of the rare places you can actually smoke in. (I don't smoke, but she does and some of our friends do too, so we go there a lot.) They've got two pretty nice tables. And a decent jukebox that they turn up loud.

How 'bout an update on the bluegrass scene up there? You know Barley's had the last Behind The Barn last night. I listened to it on the 'net. Kinda sad...kinda went out with a whimper...the band, Shanti Groove, sounded cliche and amateurish, but God bless Jeff and Sarah for all their hard work and great music.

Oh yeah, how're the Irish bars up there? Irish music? Still hopin' you run into Jordan Cavanaugh....she's a babe, even if she only plays one on TV.

I see Irish bars every time I turn around, I'm trying to hold my drinkin to the homeplace until I get a job, helps keep me motivated and focused.

However There is a weekly Oldtime jam every monday at http://sandysmusic.com/

and then a Bluegrass Jam every teusday at: http://www.cantablounge.com/schedule.html

So I'm gonna start going to these next week. There is a bar called the druid that has weekly celtic/irish music http://www.celticweb.com/druid/

This all just within walking distance of my house, haven't even got into researching Boston proper and I also missed the Boston Folk music festival, which had Tony Trischka Band, Emmy lou Harris, etc.

the Druid in Inman is great. probably the best pub ive been to in the city. sessions are on fridays starting at 6, if i remember correctly. be careful, there are a lot of pseudo-Irish pubs, like the Asangard in Central(its was built into a very modern MIT building about 2 years ago and looks REALLY out of place surrounded by all that curved glass and polished metal).

ps- scott, dont forget your banjo on saturday.

Yup, join the club. Welcome to the new Puritanism. It's funny, the only thing that could make me sympathetic to smokers is abolition. I'm glad it's restricted, I'm glad it's taxed, I'm glad you can't smoke in offices or restaurants. But leave the bars and clubs alone. I believe in moderation in everything, including health regulations. The best solution I can think of is to sell tobacco licenses to bars the same way they sell beer and liquor licenses; that way, some bars would have smoking, some wouldn't, and the market would figure out pretty quickly how many of each it could support. If the smoking bars are really booming, then inch up the tobacco license fee a little, and put the money into the state health care system.

Sorry, if I want to go out and get drunk at a bar, I shouldn't have to put up with cigarette or cigar smoke.

Perhaps there should be businesses that provide smoking facilities.

I'm an ex-smoker and there is nothing worse than a chick who smokes. I won't touch a woman that smokes. Unless she showers and has gum. It's nasty.

If she had a lot of money and begged me to hang out with her, I might reconsider. I might.

i will agree with this, its what i was thinking too. it will be nice to come home from shows and not have to throw my jacket or hoodie in the laundry simply because it reeks of smoke. i do think they should make a smoke room though, especially with winter coming. it is sad to see smokers having to enjoy their vice in the freezing cold, but at the same time i shouldnt have to put up with the smoke either. a seperate room would be the best solution, but of course a lot of places probably dont have the room or $$ for that either.

smoking bars and non-smoking bars...

Up here, the Down Home has gone to all non-smoking by popular demand, except during Wed. night Hoots. The mgmnt. said they weren't happy about that (I believe the majority of mgmnt. and staff smoke there), but said it was due to customer pressure and a desire to increase business. Guy Clark played one night and basically lit up on stage and said to hell with the smoking policy, to the cheers of the audience. No one challenged him, but, then again, he's Guy Clark and it was his show.

Some bars are just absolutely made to have smoking. Just patronize according to your wishes. Now, a blanket anti-smoking ban in bars, that *is* a bit to the Left Coast of things.

ah the Down Home. i miss that place. we were playing there once and our guitarist rolled a Drum and lit up on stage. a bunch of hippie kids in the audience thought he had rolled somthing else, and for the rest of the night thought he was the coolest thing since sliced bread. it was quite amusing.
