I think hi speed rail ain't all that hi speed, if ya ask me. It's hard to compete with air travel in terms of speed, OIG. I used to be in the aviation business, and travelled around the USA on trips. It takes about one hour 48 minutes or so... to get from Memphis to Tampa. Ever tried to DRIVE that distance? Ain't no train gonna compete with an hour 48 minutes. It seems to me that we'd be better off lettin' railroads do what railroads do best-- move the heaviest stuff that needs to be moved. For people, what we need is a CHEAPER WAY TO FLY. In other words, tons of folks WOULD fly more often, if it was only CHEAP ENOUGH. Heck it costs like 333 bucks or so to get from Memphis to Tampa on Northwest Airlines (which has a hub here), last time I checked, and that's leavin' afore Wednesday, and a comin' back ohn Sundee'. What if we subsidized airlines with cash like that? In other words, what if... instead of buying another dang aircraft carrier for 5 billion bucks, we spent that money to subsidize airlines? Instead of it costing 333 bucks to fly out to F.L.A. and back for a week, imagine if it cost only 80 bucks? Now, you're talkin' about folks doing weekend jaunts all over America! So the question is even bigger than consumption of oil; it's a question of HOW we can bring America TRULY into the age of the Jetsons. How can we eliminate (as much as possible) the time and cost constraints of geographical realities in travel? I personally think we WILL solve some of this stuff, and by the time some of us here are really old you'll see small, lightweight and very fast airplanes, and an age where millions literally FLY across America in their own personal transportation devices that are similar to the planes of today. And those who can't afford it will be able to afford an 'air taxi' that WILL get them there. But in terms of travel between major cities, the BEST WAY to get people all over America travelling is to REDUCE the COST of airline tickets. It is the COST that holds the industry back. If we subsidized airlines like we do farmers we would already be able to fly from Knoxville to Daytona Beach for a weekend for 90 bucks! The deal is that we have to have legal reforms to stop lawyers from wrecking aviation, and we need less regulations from Uncle Sam. We could already be at the point where a Memphis to Nashville flight there and back could be as little as 28 bucks. There's no reason NOT to encourage a huge amount of travel between American cities, and there IS a certain amount of disposable income for that per capita per family per person. The sad reality is that airline travel costs WAY TOO MUCH in terms of benefit, and these increases in airline security have made it even harder for airlines to make money. You got dorks searching 80 year old ladies, man; you got guards 'wanding' 90 year old men. People who get hassled, and know they will get hassled, are none too happy about it when they GET hassled. They start looking for shorter ventures, and ways around air travel. So nine eleven has hurt us BEYOND that tragedy in terms of paranoia. We had 19 middle eastern males under 40 years old RUIN the aviation travel industry, and that is just DUMB. We should employ profiling in airports with all due haste, and stop harranging 90 year old japanese women trying to go see their sons. But it is the COST of tickets that needs to come down about 40% and we'd see a HUGE INCREASE in the travel industry among Americans. And this can only benefit us all. Rail is TOO SLOW. It can't compete with good airline travel point to point. Solve the cost problem, and you'd see Americans taking off on weekends like never before.

Oh man... I'd take rail travel over flying any day of the week ! There is nothing like kicking back, watching the scenery, having a beer, and relaxing on a train. There is a quality to it that is just not even known by the majority of folkls in the US. Go to Europe. The trains there are pretty reliable and it is a wonderful way to get from point A to point B. Man, if we had a decent rail system here, I'd never fly again !But that's just me. Be well, lilamy

Remember that Dean is Pro-Passenger Rail. He built his own commuter service in New England. He WILL break the bonds of Texas terror if given a chance.

So you would spend 2 or more days on a train to get across country and back for a business trip just to experience riding on a train vs. an airplane? Yeah, they might work in densely populated corridors (if high speed) but I can't see riding a train from Nashville to Denver when you're on business. And commuter trains probably won't work that well unless there's a fairly dense core of population close by. I mean, if you have to drive or ride a bus 10 miles to catch a train to ride another 8 miles to say, downtown Knoxville, what's the point? Like it or not OIG, and I don't, the devlopment patterns over the last 60 years have been prostituted to the automobile and while they can be mitigated, you can hardly tear down and start over. As much as driving fuel-efficient cars and riding public transportation, WHERE you choose to live makes as big an impact. Is a person who drives a Civic getting great gas mileage but who commutes 30 miles one way really any better than someone who drives a mid size SUV but goes 3 miles to work every day? Not in my view.

Okay, so some stuff shirts wouldn't want to ride for two days to go across our country, but what will the Airlines use once the Oil is gone? Better yet. What if our access to the Oil we need requires our military forces to invade countries and take their Oil for our use. Do you think that Americans have no resolve, morals, dignity, forethought, or creativity? I dare say that WE do. If there were passenger services from Farragut to downtown and Airport to downtown, you would be suprised at the number of passengers that would flock to them Daily.

First of all, we will never run out of oil. It will become more scarce as years go by perhaps, but as it does, the price will rise and more and more alternatives will become palatable. I don't doubt that people will use commuter rail, but you won't address the issue of sprawling development patterns that have ALREADY been put in place for decades. You can't run twenty fixed rail systems through every neighborhood to ensure accessibility in any city much less one the size of Knoxville. The cost would be astronomical. Besides, just playing devil's advocate, what evidence do you have that to support your assertion that all these riders would give up their cars in Knoxville (7th or 8th most sprawling city) to ride a commuter train? Any studies or figures? I do agree that rail should have a more important place in solving transportation problems in this country, but you're just flat wrong if you think it will replace airlines as the choice for most long-distance travelers. The development of zero and low emission vehicles is more important in my opinion than rail.

One time I took the California Zephyr out of San Francisco and went all the way to Chicago, then got on the City of New Orleans and road down to Memphis. It took three days and was one of the coolest things I've ever done. Yeah, trains rule.Drinkin whiskey and rollin bones(dominoes) on the way to Memphis in the middle of the night was fantastic.

aviation business ... It takes about one hour 48 minutes or so... to get from Memphis to Tampa ... Ain't no train gonna compete with an hour 48 minutes.Show me a Boeing 747, 767, et. al. that doesn't dump 1/4 of its fuel load over the Smokies, and I'll eat your hat. Change the turbines to burn Hydrogen, and you've got a winner, but thats way too far off. High Speed Rail must subsidize while we wait. lettin' railroads do what railroads do best-- move the heaviest stuff that needs to be movedBushCo wants you to believe that Rail is for freight alone, and he's hiring mouthpieces to say just that. We should employ profiling in airports with all due haste, and stop harranging 90 year old japanese women trying to go see their sons.Airports have become places where Paranoid People stare at and get stared back at by other Paranoid People, scanning the waiting areas with high anxiety, praying for a glimpse of Army Fatigues sporting American flags and un-locked Uzis. They are not the hospitable places they once used to be. Too bad. Find another means of mass transit. good airline travel point to point. Solve the cost problem, and you'd see Americans taking off on weekends like never before. Can't accelerate a Jet Engine without bin Laden Juice today. Last I checked, bin Laden Juice has lotsa terror tied to it, and Alaskan reserves may keep your weekend travellers happy for about 6 months ... period.
