Hi folks. Shameless music promotion ahead: There's an amazing band playing at the Pilot Light on Tuesday, Sept. 30. Over the Rhine is the duo of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiller of Cincinnati. They're signed to Back Porch records who just released their double album "Ohio." It's the 10th release from this band that gets rave reviews from No Depression and It's a gorgeously lush set of songs, punctuated by Bergquist's vocals. She sometimes sounds like Fiona Apple or Joan Osborne, and then attempts these bluesy, jazzy numbers. It's really beautiful stuff that roughly fits under the "Americana" label. This show is atypical of the Pilot Light, hence the $12 ticket price, but it's a great opportunity to see this band in an intimate setting. This kind of band usually just plays Asheville and Nashville, and skips us altogether. Don't let that happen again! Show up, prove that Knoxville is a "market" that supports major players like Over the Rhine, and be blown away by their terrific melodies and perfect harmonies.

I second that. Over the Rhine is an amazing band. You shouldn't pass this one up. Also scheduled to appear is Steven Delopoulos. He used to play in a band called Burlap to Cashmere, which played Greek flavored folk, with some kick ass instrumentation. They played a show in Knoxville several years back that blew me away. The band has since parted ways. These days Steven is playing more of the same. If you're reading this you should: A) pick up BTC's "Live at the Bitter End" EP and the full-length "Anybody Out There?," as well as Delopoulos' new "Me Died Blue" and B) check out this show. If you don't, you'll wish you had. Also, if you're up for a road trip, Over the Rhine is playing with Pedro the Lion in Cincinnati on Friday, December 12. It's worth the damn drive for Pedro the Lion alone. They've got a new album coming sometime next year. It will be brilliant.

OTR played blue cats back in the opening days. great music, great people, but a dismal crowd (this is knoxville after all). i'd love to see 'em again (KB is amazing) but $12?!?!?!?! that price pretty much garantees a very intimate show for the ones who do shell out that kinda dough.

Yes, $12 is expensive compared to most Pilot Light shows, but most bands that play the PL aren't as big as Over the Rhine. Folks in New York are paying $12, and the cost of living here in K-town is way cheaper. People in Nashville and Cincy and Atlanta are paying $12, and probably to see them in a much bigger venue. It's all about priorities, of course. Maybe you need that $12 for food or rent. But if fewer people make paying for live music a priority, fewer bands will make it worth their while to come to our city. They'll just go to Asheville, Nashville and Atlanta as usual. Plus, the PL, in its efforts to bring quality, interesting music to Knoxville, is just trying to break even. They don't have the safety net of drunken frat dance night & cover bands like Blue Cats.

I think I may have lied about Steven Delopoulos sharing the bill. But Paige is right. Over the Rhine's psychedelic cover of "Blackbird" alone is worth the price of admission.
