Oh man that's excellent. I remember playin in that thing, I think it was the year before. We won some strange category, probably "Most Awful," and I had to come back and get the prize (a plastic comb or something) because the rest of those bastards were too fucked up to even walk. Somebody out there still has the video.

Oh my god that's brutal. Sounds like the reviewer was a member of the Unitz. A lot of people didn't "get" Wh-Wh. Even the name was, at first, kinda stand offish. Everything the reviewer hated was exactly what the band was shooting for. Wh-Wh was also a true blue local Knoxville BAND, born and bred. Unlike Unitz and all those others who came from everywhere, tried to stir shit up and then split when they dropped out of UT. No doubt Wh-Wh had a far greater impact on the "scene" than did "what's their name."

As a member of the, ahem, Unitz, I can say that I was a little pissed about the fact that whoever wrote it (they were not a member) tacked that little bit about our shitty little single on the end of the review of Wh-Wh.

And, by the way Joey, we never tried to stir shit up or drop out of UT. It's true I was the only Knoxvillian in the band. But two of the other members still live here. I can see how you might not've liked us. I wouldn't like the Unitz if I saw them now. But, like naked baby pictures, there I am. And unlike Wh-Wh, we made a living playing music. We toured all over the Southeast and worked very hard for what we got. It may not have had much artistic merit, but the experience educated me far more than any class I had at UT (from which I graduated BTW). I saw the lack of art in what I was doing, decided to address that and have put out 5 solo records, and 5 records with my other bands and continue to write, record and perform original music in Knoxville all these 16 years later. So before you discount the impact of "what's their name" consider that there is still a scene here and I'm here influencing it and you're not.

Hey, is there any Wh-Wh music recorded anywhere I could get my hands on? I'd love to have a copy. If I could go back to then, knowing what I know now, I think I might've "gotten" your band. And I most certainly would've slagged the Unitz. Time heals all wounds.

Well, as frat bands went, we were not as bad as some. Still a frat band is a frat band. We all hadda start somewhere. I can't go back and change what that band was anymore than you can. And like all of life's experiences, there was good to come out of it. Surely there are things in your past you'd like to change...

My wife was good friends with and the sometime roomate of the Unitz' singer. Now, I always found listening to his music akin to getting my teeth extracted. But I date my loss of religion to when Tex, after years and years of slogging away in obscurity, finally realized his dream of getting a real record contract, and then died a couple of months later of some horrible disease.

Life sucks, and then, when things finally look like they about to stop sucking, you die. Rest in peace, man.

Now fellas ... let's not bicker and argue over the 80s. Heck, I complained about people back then that I think are dear pals now. In this brave new century, there's room for all of us and our musical pasts. We all bleed if we're cut and get drunk if we drink a lot. The Wh-Whs and the Unitz can lay down together in fields of green. Or is it lay down with the lamb on Broadway?

Please be advised that I did not post that review in because of the U's reference (i.e. to poke at you) but simply because of the Wh-Wh comments.

I considered editing out the U's reference, but then decided that would be a violation of journalistically integrity, and then Al Franken might write a book about me.


I stumbled across a stash of Lame Jive Township Rave Monkey Manifestos, so I'm culling out all of my glowing reviews and tossing the rest, except for pieces of mis-guided writing I'm posting here.

I've got a bad STD's review to be posted later tonight, as well as an amusing picture of Ian.

I knew we were not respected because of the "cover band" label (not that that's worthy of respect). The stigma of which proved to be impossible to shake as I started writing songs. A very educational time.

Anybody remember Clock on the Wall? Didn't some faction of that band go on to form Awfully Anglo?

Yep. Scott Davis - bass and maybe Chuck White - drums.

They were joined by guitarist Steven Wicks, formerly of The Home Boys, which featured Scott Carpenter (guitar, vocals), Dave Tumblin (drums) and some guy on bass. The guy on bass helped found Sea 7 States, and Scott and Dave formed What Alice Found.

The first gig by The Home Boys (and my first ever "real rock band" gig)was opening for Clock on the Wall at Vic and Bills Rock and Roll Deli.

re. cover bands: It all comes around. I'm in discussions to join a wedding band and finally make some money in this business. They tell me I can work as many weekends as I'm willing for $$ if I'll buy a tux.
