if you've ever been the opening band

...you really need to find a copy of "Opening Act" by Ugly Duckling. It's on the Taste the Secret, which is pretty good all the way through (it's a concept album about a fast-food place called Meatshake, where they put meat in everything on the menu). But "Opening Act" is a classic -- "We're the opening act/ We do a couple songs and then we don't come back/ and when we finish we'll be hopin' you clap". The best part is at the end when the guy tries to engage the crowd in call-and-response: "Say 'I wanna rock right now,' everybody -- (crowd chatter, glasses clinking) -- say 'I wanna rock right now,' somebody -- (crickets chirping) -- say 'I wanna rock right now,' anybody -- (girl's voice calls out from the back, "You guys suck")"

It's painful, but funny.

Someone at KFAR has a copy of that, because I've heard it before. Now I'll have to track it down and listen to the whole thing.

Not better. But it is more hip-hop-ish. Got a DJ yet, zilla?
