the only thing odd about this calculator is that it asks you to donate one hour of your salary and gives the amount of one hour of your salary which is about 3 dollars more than is actually one hour of your salary.

Damn, I'm rich! I think I'll just retire right now. Thanks for the link, Scott, it's a good reminder. We can fight all we want within our own little sphere, but from the standpoint of the rest of the world, there's not much difference between most of us and Bill Gates.

Interestingly, even making U.S. minimum wage puts you in the top 20 percent of the world...

So what's the trick to maintain your US income while living on a beautiful island, or hell even a beach on the mainland somewhere?

Well, there are people who work for 6 months in the U.S. or Europe, save up money, and then go spend 6 months living like kings (or at least dukes) in South America. I know a guy who got laid off and took his severance pay to Panama and spent half a year lying on the beach getting massages.

Yep, I know folks who went to ! Poland and did the same thing-- rented their house out for six months to short-term visitors and then used that money for rent, food and beer for six months.I would be happy spending four months in Vilnius a year (summer/springish) Or even Costa Rica, but in the mountians. I find that sitting on the beach, for me, gets old after a couple of weeks. But, the first couple of weeks are real nice and useful to the mind/soul/spirit/feet/watever. I'd write more but I'm crushed by the J-Lo thing.

So how expensive is it to hang out in Poland or the Baltic states? Never been there, but been to Germany, Sweden, Norway while the curtain was still up. Best pils I ever had outside of Germany came from Poland. I've heard of musicians hanging out for cheap in former East Bloc countries. What are the governments like these days?

The rumors are true-The Baltic States are to me the undiscovered 'next Prague' or such. Prague of course is still great and has, imo, the best Pils in the world, speaking of that great love/topic. Vilnius, Lithuania or Tallinn, Estonia would be great places to hang out and not pay much to live. And see some good music and such. Governments are very stable-- though there are some issues with organized crime all over Eastern Europe. It's easy to avoid, though. Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, all cheaper than TN. You cou do a lot worse than to kick back in E. Europe for six months, very easy to get teaching jobs, too.
