Not that he would've known me from Adam or anything, but technically, he was a relative (June Carter and I are both descended from an Irish hatter named James Dougherty).

I can do you one better. June and my grandfather were first cousins.

June and my grandfather were first cousins

That makes my head spin, thinking of how we're related. June & I are fifth cousins, however that works out.

Very cool, I'm not related that I know of but the way Johny Cash talks is the way my grandma and grandpa sound.

He was a little bit of most folks families, blood relation or not. When I was still young and dumb and had first discovered rebellion, my parents teased me and said I was acting like the Man in Black because that's all I would wear. I took it as an insult since I didn't care for "country" music, until I listened to what the man said. They could have paid me no greater compliment.

After Elvis left Sun Records, the rest of us toured together: Carl, Jerry Lee, Roy, and occasionally Warren Smith, Billy Riley and Charlie Feathers. I can't say why and why it was that the violence started. I won't speak for the others, but my little group and I were very destructive. When June Carter came along, we decided to initiate her. In some motel somewhere we brought in one of those machines that suck up leaves, and went to work on her room. Standing in the middle of her bed screaming, we opened her suitcase and she watched her clothes disappear, then the sheet she was standing on. Bottle breaking became a favorite steam valve. Until one night, backstage at a ballroom in Iowa. The opening band was on, we picked up the bottles to start. She picked one up, screamed, "I've had enough, I'm joining you!" But she threw the bottle at me. Then she turned over a clothes rack, then started throwing bottles at all of us, then against the wall. I yelled for her to stop, but she wouldn't, so I grabbed her and held her. "Okay," I said, "We won't do it anymore." "Promise me!" she said, with the meanest look a woman ever gave me, "I promise" I said. So beginning that night, she began the long, slow process of trying to tame me, and how sweet it was. But that streak was hard to get me off of.

Sometimes at night. When I hear the wind. I wish I was crazy again.

Yahoo! has a great slide show of The Man In Black, including a cool news photo of him being escorted in handcuffs in '65 by the El Paso County law. Even under arrest, he's Johnny Cash, a "towering figure in American music."

There's also a pic of him with Dubya and Laura bush, after he received a big award last year, one of many. But, I also have a friend who worked in audiovisual in DC who personally made sure Johnny and June got a copy of a new video delivered to their hotel room, and the two *invited him in* and spent a long time just shootin' the breeze with him, before inviting him to their concert at a small club that night (which my friend said is one of the best shows he's every seen, and he's been to the biggest --- Springsteen, the Stones...). So, what you read about Johnny is true: He may have shook hands with the mighty, but he was always a friend of the working man.
