I don't know where to start.
I think CDs are way too expensive.
Obviously, the entire model for recording, distributing, and experiencing recorded music has changed. It's going to keep changing, no matter what anyone tries to do.
Outside of a handful of artists, radio airplay (or lack thereof) has less influence than ever on record sales and especially ticket sales to concerts. Lack of airplay, even for major artists, is astonishing. Radio (outside of a select few and usually low power stations) has almost completely divorced itself from having a legitimate connection with music. It's about lifestyle programming to sell advertising. Nothing more.
The lawsuits make the RIAA look really pathetic and impotent. They may scare a few people short term but I don't think that they are going to change what's happening out there.
And what's happening is that more artists are taking control of their work and its production and distribution, often outside the confines of any major record label. And fans have all sorts of new ways of gaining access to that music.
I remember a few years ago at SXSW there was a panel about being signed to a major record label. It was titled something like, "OK, Now You're Signed....Your Problems are just beginning."
It was true then, but it's exponentially more true now. The major labels are an unbelievable, mindnumbing mess.
The paradigm has shifted and continues to shift.
It's interesting right now. I'm glad I'm not in the record biz.

Thanks for the expert insight, AC. With that in mind, I guess it explains why the Knox bands that were signed to major labels went away dissolusioned and a wee bit pissed (if the MP accounts I've read are any indication). I hope Robinella fares better; they are good, talented kids but their eyes are going to be opened.Let me vent again: The RIAA are a bunch of CROOKED NAZI DICKS and could care less about the music and artists that most of us hold dear to our hearts! That means people we know personally, for a lot of us who post here.

I don't know how expert my insight is, as I've never been on the record company/artist end of things to any significant degree.
But here's the way it looks to me:
Most successful performing (this is a key word) bands (especially long-term successful bands) did the hard work themselves - for them, the record label that they sign to becomes a tool, another member of their team. They're part of the gameplan, an inportant part, but they are not the magic bullet for success or the solution to all of your problems.
You have to have your own plan and know what you want to accomplish and how.
You have to write great songs, have a great live show that connects with people, and get out there and play for them and develop your fan base, a dozen or so at a time at first.
Only you can make people care about your music.
It helps to have a good street team and a means of reaching the fans that you pick up along the way (a mailing list) so that you can get them to come back.
These days a website is essential, of course.
The scale on which you operate is a critical consideration as well.
You need to be thoughtful and strategic.A record company can put out your record. They might advertise it (but, believe it or not, they might not and even when they do they might not advertise the smartest and most effective way because they might really understand what your band is about and who your potential audience really is.)
They might be able to get it played on the radio. But probably not.
If you've gone out there and built a strong fan base and established links with your audience, then they can provide a great foundation in which to grow.
If you haven't, and by some kind of luck, you get signed to a record deal because some A&R person needs a new signing and thinks you might be the next big thing, and then that record is released, it's being released into a void, a black hole, where nobody cares outside of maybe a handful of devotees in your hometown Which isn't enough.
Of course, there are always exceptions but I wouldn't bank on being one. Your odds are better in Vegas.

What is Spooky Daly Pride like?After Sundown, Michelle Malone & the Low-Down Georgia Revue will rock it at Thinq Tank. Funky folkster Brandy Robinson & band will open that gig. I finally met Brandy last night. Seems like a sweet lady.

I haven't actually heard Spooky Daly Pride myself, but I know that they are a funky jam band with a pretty strong buzz in some circles. We can see for ourselves tomorrow night.
