I'm an huge Will Oldham fan, but the last two albums have bored me to tears. Not that they're bad, just... damn, I miss the days when he did stuff like covering AC/DC's "Big Balls".
Lost Blues 1 and 2 are my favorites of his.

I like PGMG because they're a Rock Band who somehow manage to not make that idea seem ridiculous. They could do with another hook or two, but I like Andrea Zollo's singing, and they have an honest to god rhythm section who aren't afraid to wopbopaloobop. I've only listened to the new one once, and on first go-round I'm not sure it adds anything to the first one. But I'll give it some more time.

Well, there's good ridiculous and bad ridiculous. I guess what I mean is, PGMG don't make retro-rock or fashion-rock or punk-rock or nu-rock or any particular kind of rock, they don't sound neo-anything in particular, they just sound like people who like loud guitars and noisy drums, without being coy or ironic or earnest or tortured or anything except kind of bam-bam-bam.

The stereo is always the first thing I unpack. I can't do menial labor like unpacking boxes without some music. Julie will be digging through boxes looking for something important, like underwear or towels, and I'll be like, "Hold on, I gotta get this speaker wire strung..."

First day of moving into the dorms, freshman year, August 1987 -- I set up the stereo, pulled Pleased to Meet Me from one of my crates of records*, and dropped the needle on side 2. "Absolution is out of the question..." 2 minutes later, my RA was at the door informing that that was too loud and he could hear it all the way down the hall. And so began my higher education.
*One thing I don't miss about vinyl -- moving it. I left what remains of the LP collection (after Jay Nations got done raiding it) in a basement on Gratz Street.
