As a South Knoxville resident of almost five years (and for many years to come, insha allah), I'd like to offer an addendum to Matt's musing over a downtown movie theater's possible customer base. Even beyond old Sevier, which is the only southside 'hood he mentions, all of South Knoxville is a potential movie crowd. A downtown theater would be the closest one to anyone from Island Home, Vestal and all the way to Seymour.

Sorry, meant no disrespect. Actually I looked up the census info on all of the city part of South Knox - don't have 'em handy but I believe that added another 1500 or more $50K plus households.

But I decided tossing that in muddled up my main point that there are 30,000 people and 1000 middle-income households in the core city.

No offense taken. I just thought it added all the more to the point that a downtown theater would serve a lot more people than a lot of people think.

As someone who can see Ye Olde Steak House (now in all its arsoned glory) accross Chapman Highway from my deck in the wintertime, I can vouch that my wife and I would love a downtown movie theatre and not having to drive to West Knoxville or East Knoxville to see movies.
